21 May 2013.  Congratulations to Emily Thompson!  Her Life Scholars summer research grant proposal focused on mitochondrial DNA deletions in aging C. elegans was funded!

10 May 2013.  Dee returned from a Buddhism and Science Symposium at Maitripa College led by Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama!

16 April 2013.  Congratulations to Caitlyn!  Her Undergraduate Research, Innovation, & Scholarship grant proposal focused on developing genetic screening tools for Xiphinema plant-parasitic nematodes was funded!

14 March 2013.  Emily was awarded a Libbie H. Hyman Memorial Scholarship from the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology to participate in a Coral Reef Ecology course in Panama this summer!

23 February 2013.  Dee just signed his contract to write a book titled The Dharma in DNA: A Buddhist View of Systems in Nature for Harvard University Press :)

30 January 2013.  A NSF Proposal focusing on compensatory evolution in C. elegans has just been submitted with the Estes lab... Toes crossed!

23 January 2013.  A NSF Pre-Proposal focusing on experimental evolution in Aiptasia anemones has just been submitted... Fingers crossed!

12 December 2012.  Great news - Katie has been offered a faculty position with the Pacific University Biology Department!

19 September 2012.  Wendy Phillips joins the Denver lab as a new postdoctoral scholar - woo hoo!

02 August 2012.  Our paper describing selfish DNA dynamics in C. briggsae mitochondria was published inPLoS ONE!  Go Katie, Dana, Kristin, Danika & Sita!

12 June 2012.  Lots of news.... Michael successfully defended his PhD and is off to a new job at the Oregon National Primate Research Center!  Dana was promoted to Senior FRA!  Denver lab awarded an OSU Technology Resource Fund grant to develop an undergraduate genomics computer lab on campus!  Dee's application for a 'staybattical' next fall approved by OSU!

20 April 2012. Emily is off to the EVO-WIBO meeting of Pacific NW evolutionary biologists.  She will present a research poster titled 'Modeling genotype-environment interaction and evolution of a plastic bleaching response in corals and sea anemones.  Go Emily!

11 April 2012. Riana was just selected for a NSF IGERT Healthy Aging graduate fellowship - woo hoo!

03 April 2012.  Katie, Mike, Dana & Dee are at the 2012 Evolution of Caenorhabditis and Other Nematodes conference at Cold Spring Harbor!

23 March 2012. Our paper describing base substitution rates and spectra in C. briggsae and C. elegans using Illumina high-throughput DNA sequencing was accepted for publication in Genome Biology and Evolution!

29 September 2011.  Two new PhD students join the Denver lab!  Welcome to Emily Weiss (BS, Texas A&M 2010) and Riana Wernick (BS, Arizona State 2010).

22 August 2011. Dana was accepted into the highly competitive Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories Programming for Biology course.  Go Dana!

03 August 2011. Jet-setting lab worm has first class DNA!  A study done at the University of Princeton by Josh Shapiro showed that all C. elegans natural isolates from around the world have virtually the same Chromosome V sequence - evidence of a very strong and recent selective sweep event.  The New Scientist reported on this finding, and interviewed Dee about selective sweeps in the process:  http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21128194.900-jetsetting-lab-worm-h... 21 July 2011. Mike got 2nd place at the Society of Nematologists meeting student oral presentation competition!  Mike presented his work on competition among C. briggsae natural isolates in the presence and absence of microsporidian parasites.  Go Mike!

05 July 2011. A review paper written by Dee, Katie and Mike titled "Reproductive mode evolution in nematodes: insights from molecular phylogenies and recently discovered species" was just accepted for publication in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution - woo hoo!

16 June 2011.  No rest for Katie - now she's off to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) Symposium in Chicago.  Katie was one of four postdoctoral scholar applicants who was awarded a grant by UMDF this year.

09 June 2011.  Dee is off to the HHMI Science-Education Alliance Symposium at the HHMI Janelia Farm research campus in the DC area.  Dee and a student (Ariana Snow) from his Genomics Research Lab class will share the discoveries and experiences of the class, and report on the Worm Hunters pilot program.

06 June 2011.  Katie is off to participate in NSF's FIRST-IV program at the Oregon Insittute for Marine Biology.  The mission of this program is to improve undergraduate education through postdoctoral scholars.  Go Katie!
